WHY DOTH THOU DITHER?
* Dithering initially came into being because screens and formats used to run out of colors.
But now, dithering is used as a stylistic choice, to give a retro feel to images.

Dither is routinely used in processing of both digital audio and video data, and is often one of the last stages of mastering audio to a CD.
